Table of Contents
1. express
City roads that are reserved for motor traffic with full or partial control access and provided with grade separation at intersections are called expressways. These are usually constructed in industrial or commercial or business districts to have a direct link between major points of traffic generation. Along the expressway, motor traffic gains a very high speed. Neither loading nor unloading of goods is allowed on these expressways. Pedestrians also cannot cross the expressway.
2. arterial roads
City roads that usually carry through traffic on a continuous route are called main roads. Main roads in developed commercial centers are usually less than 15 km apart, while in less important areas they may be less than 8 km. Main roads are also divided highways with fully or partially controlled access. Parking, loading and unloading are carefully controlled. Pedestrians are allowed to cross them only at the intersection.
3. sub-arterial roads
City roads that offer a lower level of travel mobility than main roads are called sub-arterial roads. Their distance can vary from 0.5 km in central business districts to 3 to 5 km in suburban areas. Loading and unloading is generally prohibited. Pedestrians are allowed to cross these highways at intersections.
4. collector roads
City roads that are built to collect and distribute traffic to and from local roads, as well as to provide access to main and sub-arterial roads, are called collector roads. These are located in residential, commercial and industrial areas. These roads are accessible from the buildings along them. Parking restrictions are less and that too during peak hours.
5. local roads
City streets that provide access to residences, businesses, and other buildings are called local roads. The traffic to be carried either starts or ends on local roads. Depending on the significant surrounding areas, a local street can be residential, commercial or industrial. Pedestrians can walk freely on local streets and parking may be allowed without restriction.
