How to choose floor tiles for buildings

There are many alternative types of tiles for flooring and we must choose the type of tile to be used very carefully. The appearance of a finished building will be greatly influenced by the flooring material used and also, the flooring material must suit the type of building for which it is chosen. Expensive tiles do not go well with low cost buildings and similarly cheap tiles do not suit prestigious buildings. The following are some of the factors to consider when choosing ceramic tiles for your buildings.

1. water absorption

Ordinary clay tiles can have an absorption capacity of more than 10 percent of their own weight in the body and a low modulus of breakage. On the other hand, for stoneware tiles manufactured with a mixture of clay and special silicone materials, good tiles will have less water absorption; It should not exceed 2.5 percent.

2. Glaze quality and thickness

The quality and thickness of the glaze used are very important factors in choosing glazed floor tiles. It is good to remember that the bright colors used for ceramics require a body with a high expansion coefficient and this can be easily achieved only in porous and relatively low strength ceramics. Therefore, with these types of backings, very brightly colored tiles do not corrode very well in areas with heavy traffic.

3. wall and floor tiles

Until recently, most glazed clay tiles were suitable for walls. There is traffic with people walking on the floor and hence, the floor tiles should have better wear surface. Even in floors, we must differentiate between places with light traffic like residences and places with heavy traffic like shopping centers, railway stations, avenues, etc. The chosen flooring material should match the traffic. When selecting glazed tiles for flooring, great care must be taken to check the quality and thickness of the glazing. Otherwise, the floor will wear out in a short time.

4. aesthetics

Apart from ceramic tiles there are many options for flooring like marble, terrazzo. The material and pattern of the tiles chosen should always satisfy the aesthetics.

5. Celebration

Flooring material should fulfill its function. In a computer room, we generally go for flexible floors like PVC or linoleum floors. Similarly, we would prefer wooden floors for the dance floor. In bathrooms we usually use marble floors. In workplaces, like kitchens, the floor should not be brittle.

6. Cost

The flooring material should match the cost of the envisaged construction. For high class building like kitchen we should use high grade tiles.
