HOW TO REDUCE BULK SAMPLE OF SAND TO TEST SAMPLE USING SAND SPLITTER?

Sand sample reduction using sand splitter

Sand splitter is the accepted method for fine aggregates that are drier than saturated-surface-dry conditions. As a quick check to determine this condition, if the sand remains a hand-molded shape, then the sand is considered wet compared to saturated-surface-dry.

The sand splitter is a smaller version of the mechanical splitter, except that the openings are fixed and there are no hopper doors.

Process of using sand splitter

  1. Lay the sand splitter on a flat surface
  2. Place the pan under the splitter to catch all the particles.
  3. Slowly insert the dried sample into the splitter from the edge (never from the end or corner).
  4. Mix the samples again and split the sample a second time to eliminate any separation.
  5. After a split second, the two receiving pans will contain the same amount of ingredients. Only one pan is put back into the hopper and the splitting process is repeated until the desired size sample is obtained.
