Road base and base course work
The road base is the most important structural layer in bituminous pavement. It is designed to perform the task of distributing the traffic load so as not to exceed the bearing capacity of the subgrade. In addition, it helps to provide sufficient resistance to fatigue under cyclic loads and to provide high rigidity to the pavement structure.
However, a base course is generally provided to give a well prepared and even surface for laying on the wear course. With regard to the load distribution function, it also helps in spreading the traffic load to the road base but it is not the major function of the base course.
